Popular pepper varieties in Vietnam
Vietnam has about 20 varieties of pepper grown commercially, each variety suitable for different regions. Compare 6 main varieties according to yield, disease resistance, quality and market value to choose the right variety for your orchard.
Summary: When deciding to plant pepper or replant, choosing varieties is a long-term investment decision of 15-20 years. Each Vietnamese pepper variety has its own advantages and disadvantages — there is no "best variety" that applies to all regions. This article compares the six most popular commercial varieties according to practical criteria, helping orcharders make decisions that suit their land, region and economic goals.
Applies to: New pepper growers or those considering replanting in the Central Highlands (Dak Lak, Gia Lai, Dak Nong) and the Southeast (Ba Ria — Vung Tau, Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai), Phu Quoc.
Duration: Decide 30-60 days before placing seed.
Difficulty level: Basic. It's important not to choose to follow the trend.
Estimated additional costs: Varieties can vary by 30-60 percent in productivity and market value.
Four similar comparison criteria
Before viewing each variety, understand the evaluation criteria:
Productivity
Calculated in tons of dry pepper per hectare per year. Vietnamese pepper has a yield range of 2-5 tons/hectare, depending on variety and care.
Pest and disease resistance
Especially with two dangerous diseases — quick death (due to *Phytophthora capsici*) and slow death (due to *Fusarium* combined with nematodes). Varieties with good resistance genes have a much lower risk of orchard loss.
Grain quality
- Volume of thousands of seeds: large seeds (over 45 grams per thousand seeds) sell for a higher price.
- Essential oil ratio: higher than 3 percent is quality pepper.
- Piperine ratio: higher than 5 percent is hot pepper — liked by the West Asian market.
- Dry grain color: evenly bright black.
Suitable for region and land
Each variety has its own adaptation zone. Planting the wrong variety = yield 20-40 percent lower than the correct variety.
Six popular pepper varieties
Tieu Vinh Linh
Originally from Quang Tri, bred and popularized in many regions.
- Yield: 3-4.5 tons per hectare of commercial crops.
- Disease resistance: average. Diseases that cause rapid and slow death must be carefully prevented.
- Grain quality: weight of thousand seeds 45-50 grams. Essential oil ratio 3-3.5 percent.
- Suitable regions: Central Highlands (Dak Lak, Gia Lai), Southeast (Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai).
- Characteristics: strong growth, few side branches. Produces fruit after 2.5-3 years of planting.
This is the most popular variety in Vietnam today, accounting for about 40-50 percent of the area.
Tieu Loc Ninh
Hybrid variety originating from Binh Phuoc.
- Yield: 3.5-5 tons per hectare.
- Disease resistance: fair enough to die quickly. Medium resistance dies slowly.
- Grain quality: weight of thousand seeds 50-55 grams (larger than Vinh Linh). Piperine ratio 5-5.5 percent.
- Suitable region: Southeast (especially Binh Phuoc, Ba Ria — Vung Tau).
- Characteristics: tree grows moderately, has many secondary branches, bears fruit after 3 years.
The variety is recommended for areas with a history of rapid mortality.
Tieu Phu Quoc
Specialty variety, only grown in Phu Quoc and some island areas.
- Yield: 2-3 tons per hectare (lower than hybrid varieties).
- Disease resistance: average.
- Seed quality: smaller (40-45 grams per thousand seeds) but high essential oil ratio of 4-5 percent. Characteristic fragrance.
- Suitable areas: only Phu Quoc and some western coastal islands.
- Features: product has geographical indication, selling price is 2-3 times higher than regular pepper.
Suitable for growers in Phu Quoc who want to make high-quality pepper.
Tieu Se
Traditional varieties, less planted than hybrid varieties.
- Yield: 2-3 tons per hectare.
- Disease resistance: good for quick death. Fairly resistant to slow death.
- Grain quality: small seeds 38-42 grams per thousand seeds. Essential oil ratio 3.5-4 percent.
- Suitable region: Central Highlands, especially areas with a history of epidemics.
- Features: durable tree, economic life span of 20-25 years. Gives fruit after 3-4 years.
Safe varieties for areas where epidemics have occurred — trade off productivity for sustainability.
Pepper Tra Vinh
Like the Mekong Delta, less common in the Central Highlands.
- Yield: 2.5-3.5 tons per hectare.
- Disease resistance: good resistance to nematodes — a big advantage.
- Grain quality: average. Essential oil ratio 3-3.5 percent.
- Suitable region: Mekong Delta, alluvial land.
- Characteristics: tolerant to waterlogging better than Central Highlands varieties — more suitable for low-lying land.
Tieu Trung Luong (Tieu Ly Son)
Specialties of Ly Son, Quang Ngai.
- Yield: 2-2.5 tons per hectare.
- Disease resistance: average.
- Bean quality: characteristic flavor, deep spicy aftertaste. Weight of thousand seeds 42-48 grams.
- Suitable areas: only Ly Son and some coastal areas of Quang Ngai.
- Characteristics: like Phu Quoc, high-priced specialty pepper, narrow market.
Summary comparison table
| Same | Productivity (tons/ha) | Resistant to quick death | Mass of thousands of grains (grams) | Suitable area |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vinh Linh | 3-4.5 | Average | 45-50 | Central Highlands, Southeast |
| Loc Ninh | 3.5-5 | Fair | 50-55 | Southeast |
| Phu Quoc | 2-3 | Average | 40-45 | Phu Quoc, island |
| Sparrow | 2-3 | Good | 38-42 | The Central Highlands has an epidemic |
| Tra Vinh | 2.5-3.5 | Average | 42-46 | Mekong Delta |
| Trung Luong | 2-2.5 | Average | 42-48 | Ly Son |
How to choose breeds according to the situation
New orchard in an area with no history of epidemics
- Choose high yield: Vinh Linh or Loc Ninh.
- Mix 80 percent of main breeds + 20 percent of secondary breeds to reduce risk.
Replanting on land that once had a rapid death epidemic
- Choose a resistant variety: Se or Loc Ninh.
- Make sure to rotate crops for 2-3 years before replanting.
Coastal islands
- Phu Quoc pepper for the high-end market.
- Make sure to have a consumption link before planting — the specialty pepper market is narrow.
Lowland Mekong Delta
- Tra Vinh pepper tolerates waterlogging well.
- Need to have a 50-80 cm high tire.
Source of seedlings
- Buy from provincial seed centers, plant institutes, licensed companies.
- Avoid floating varieties and varieties without clear origin labels.
- Best high-grade seedlings — plants made from branch tip cuttings (better than stem cuttings), 6-9 months old.
- Check seedlings before buying: strong white roots, stable old leaves, no signs of yellow leaves or root rot.
Common mistakes
Choosing varieties according to the agent without consulting the locality: agents have an interest in selling their own varieties.
Growing a single variety on a large area: the epidemic spreads quickly if an outbreak occurs. Mix multiple breeds to reduce risk.
News "super yield of 8 tons per hectare": there is no commercial pepper variety reaching this level in Vietnam.
Using cuttings from a diseased orchard: spreads the disease to the new orchard.
Choose varieties just for high yield, ignore disease resistance: orchards planted with high-yield but disease-sensitive varieties can be lost in 2-3 years.
