Handbook for growing betel leaves in urban apartments
Betel nut is easy to grow but still needs a drainage pot, loose substrate, diffused light and a watering schedule according to the dryness of the soil. This article shows how to set up healthy betel pots in apartments, offices and covered balconies.
Summary: Betel nut is an easy plant to grow, can tolerate low light and is suitable for urban spaces. But "livable" doesn't mean the plant can withstand all conditions. Most betel pots fail in apartments because the pots are waterlogged, the substrate stays moist for too long, or they are watered on a fixed schedule. If set up correctly from the beginning, the plant will produce leaves evenly, with little yellowing and easily recover when changing positions.
Applies to: Apartments, offices, cafes, covered balconies and work corners with little direct sunlight.
Duration: 30-60 minutes to set up new pot, monitor for first 2-4 weeks.
Difficulty level: Basic. The most important are drainage and scattered light.
Estimated additional costs: 80 thousand to 400 thousand VND depending on the tree, pot and substrate.
Correct understanding of betel nut in the house
Betel nut likes diffused light, tolerates partial shade and can be grown in clay pots or vase of water. In apartments, plants often grow more slowly than in the orchard because of weak light, little wind, and humidity changes with air conditioning.
What plants need:
- Indirect light, not harshly exposed to the midday sun.
- The substrate is airy, not compacted.
- The pot has drainage holes.
- Irrigate when the soil is dry, do not water on a rigid schedule.
- There is support if you want the tree to climb and its leaves to grow.
If you just put the tree in a closed decorative pot and water it regularly, the roots will lack oxygen and the tree's leaves will turn yellow very quickly.
Choose plants when buying
When buying betel leaves, you should choose a healthy plant from the beginning. Don't just look at the foliage above.
Signs of good plants:
- The body is firm, the joints are not soft.
- Green leaves, no widespread brown spots.
- The roots are ivory white or light brown, without odor.
- It's not too soggy.
- There are no aphids, spider mites or mold on the underside of the leaves.
If the newly purchased plant has a few slightly yellow old leaves, there is no need to worry. But if it turns yellow, the root is soft or the gourd smells sour, you should change to another plant.
Choose a pot
Betel pots should have clear drainage holes. The pot diameter only needs to be about 3-5 cm larger than the root ball. If the pot is too large and stays moist for too long, the plant won't have time to absorb all the water and will easily become waterlogged.
Suggestions for choosing pots:
| Situation | Suitable pot type |
|---|---|
| For desk | Plastic or ceramic pot with holes, small size |
| Hanging from balcony | Lightweight, well-drained hanging pot |
| For climbing plants | The pot is stable and has enough room for moss stakes |
| Use pots to cover | The pot inside must still have holes and can be removed when watering |
Do not plant directly into an outer pot without holes. If you like decorative pots, place pots with holes inside and pour off excess water after each watering.
Mixing substrate
Good substrate for betel nut needs to be moderately moist but drains quickly. Can be coordinated in the direction:
- Processed coconut fiber.
- Small pine bark.
- Hun Husk.
- Perlite or pumice.
- Some clean soil if needed to keep it moist.
Reference formula:
| Ingredients | Ratio |
|---|---|
| Processed coconut fiber | 40 percent |
| Small pine bark or smoked rice husk | 30 percent |
| Perlite/pumice | 20 percent |
| Clean soil or very light compost | 10 percent |
Avoid using heavy soil in small pots, especially in airtight rooms. Squash soil causes the roots to lack oxygen and leaves to turn yellow even though the plants are still watered evenly.
Plant placement
The best location is where there is scattered light:
- Near the window with curtains.
- The balcony is hidden from the harsh afternoon sun.
- Bright corner of the room, with natural light for several hours a day.
- The desk is near the glass door but not directly exposed to the west sun.
If the plant is placed in a dark corner, the plant can still live for a while but the leaves become smaller, the vines stretch and the leaf color fades. When you want to expose the plant to brighter light, you should gradually increase the light over a few days to avoid burning the leaves.
Moss and vines stakes
The betel nut can be left hanging or allowed to climb. If you want big leaves and a compact tree shape, you should use moss stakes, coconut fiber stakes or thin nets.
How to tie:
- Place the stake firmly in the pot.
- Guide the tree trunk along the stake.
- Use a soft string to tie it lightly near the body joint.
- Do not tighten the rope to the body.
- When the tree has aerial roots clinging to the stake, gradually reduce the tying.
Do not force your body to bend strongly at once. The betel nut is soft but can still break at the joint if pulled too hard.
Monitor the first 2-4 weeks
After repotting or bringing the plant indoors, the plant needs time to adapt. During the first 2-4 weeks, monitor:
- Does the leaf maintain tension?
- How many days does it take for the surface of the substrate to dry?
- Are there yellow leaves that spread quickly from the base?
- Is there a sour smell in the pot?
- Does the tree produce new leaves?
If leaves turn yellow, check drainage and watering before thinking about lack of fertilizer. Newly potted betel leaves usually do not need to be fertilized immediately.
Checklist for setting up betel pots
- [ ] Choose a tree with a strong trunk and strong roots.
- [ ] Use a pot with drainage holes.
- [ ] The pot is only about 3-5 cm larger than the root ball.
- [ ] The substrate is loose and has airy materials.
- [ ] Place the light in scattered light.
- [ ] Do not water if the surface of the substrate is still damp.
- [ ] Have stakes or support if you want the tree to climb.
- [ ] Record the date of repotting and the location of the plant.
Mistakes to avoid
Water every day to be sure: Indoor betel plants do not drain water as quickly as outdoors, causing the roots to easily rot.
Place close to west-facing glass: afternoon sunlight can burn leaf edges, especially young leaves.
Use a closed pot without holes: standing water at the bottom causes the roots to gradually rot.
Repot too large: the substrate will take a long time to dry, the plant will easily turn yellow.
Fertilize when the plant is new to the pot: the roots are not yet stable, heavy fertilization can easily weaken the plant.
